Mario Party 10 continues the tradition of gameplay in the Mario Party series, primarily that of the previous title, Mario Party 9. In the standard "Mario Party" gamemode, four players, controlled by either human or CPU, compete to collect the most mini stars. The players traverse together in a vehicle across a game board, and whoever has the most mini stars when they reach the end of the board wins. Each player takes turns serving as the vehicle's "captain", who rolls a die to progress forward, making choices on spaces and the path the vehicle takes along the way. Two boss battles are on each board, and the four players work together to defeat them.[4] Five different maps are included in Mario Party: Mushroom Park, Haunted Trail, Whimsical Waters, Airship Central, and Chaos Castle.[5] Scattered across the board is minigame spaces, and when landed on, one of 70 minigames will ensue.[6] Minigames are split into three types: free-for-alls, where all four players compete against each other; 2 vs 2's, where players are randomly split into two teams and compete against each other; and 3 vs 1's, where three players compete against one with an advantage.[7] Minigames vary in gameplay, but consists of platforming using the Wiimote's motion controls games, and memory and puzzle challenges.[8] Bowser is displayed on the Wii U GamePad, locked in a prison. If all four players collectively land on one of each sides of the die, Bowser is freed,[9] and offers additional hindrances and challenges, such as requiring the player to come in last place in order to win minigames.[10] Each round of Mario Party is roughly 30 minutes in length.[5]
